Building Block #2
After my conference, I have decided to further refine my research question in order to investigate something a little less researched. My official research question is now, what effects do floating have on nursing job satisfaction and patient care? In my own experience floating can cause great conflict between coworkers, and between management and their employees.
I think that there is also a possibility that floating can have a negative effect on patient care as the nurse is moved to a floor he or she is not as familiar with. I would like to research further the effects on the nurse’s perception of their job when routinely floated and how they feel patient care is potentially affected. There is not an abundance of research done on this topic and I think it could be interesting to further investigate.

The topic that I decided to research for my research paper in nurse burnout. A question that I would like answered is; what causes such high rates of burnout in the nursing profession? After doing a preliminary search I found some potential answers in literature but nothing conclusive. I also found that personally I have a different answer to the question than most articles I read. I think it would be interesting to do some more research and talk to my many nurse friends about why they are feeling burned out.
Nursing is an exhausting, high stress, high emotion profession with rates of burnout that far exceed most other professions. I think it is important to investigate what leads to such a disproportionate number of unsatisfied nurses. It’s important to understand why this is happening in order to make a change.

Your research draft was quite interesting.
* I think this paper has a clear Thesis. I understand right from the start that we are talking about how it can be frustrating to float from floor to floor when you are familiar with something else.
* The purpose of your paper is clear. Floating is frustrating.
* The paper is organized and the information is easy to follow.
* When reading your paper I was able to put myself into your paper and compare it to my life. I work in the early childhood field and we sometimes have to float from room to room. This too can be very frustrating because there is a big difference between teaching a toddler and teaching a preschool child. I understand from your paper that there are two sides to the argument some that can benefit and some that could make floating difficult.
* Your resource from the Joint Commission was helpful as well as the Sink or Swim article.
* The facebook poll was clear that people in this position would rather not float from floor to floor.
* Your conclusion is clear and the paper is a easy to read and follow piece

Hello Kendall,
From your first draft of the paper I can see that you already have good idea of how you are going to structure your paper which is great!! Having all the information and just putting that rest together will help you know what you are missing and what you still need to do more research on.
This is also such an interesting and a different topic. I have never heard of a “floating nurse” before and an not really familiar with how hospital staffing works, so this is something that I definitely, along with many other people, would learn a lot from.

I also noticed that you used a lot of very great examples to make up your paper. I feel that all the detail for those examples will only make your paper a lot stronger. Example four that you included with all the data points stood out to me because it had solid data and statistical evidence!

I think your research was beneficial to your topic and including nurses responses aided the paper. I think the organization of your paper was well done and that it helped to answer the question you posed nicely. Overall, it was clear to understand the viewpoints that people hold on floating nurses.
